MS DNS or Bind
I work for a non-profit group (roarofwashington.org) and I am currently moving thier website so that it is onsite. The servers here are all part of a Windows 2000 Server domain, and initailly had the ms dns running. I moved the website so that it is on the local servers, and I have changed all the registrar information so that I can make an authoritative DNS server onsite as well.
When I did this, I quickly ran into a problem with views, so I installed bind and configured it with views so that both internally and externally, the domain works. However, I have found that the other client computers in the domain don't like the bind dns. I setup a ms DFS for storing shared files, but I get errors on some computers, but not on others when doing exactly the same thing. (aka browsing the dfs) And a while later, one that did error, might work and others might not. It is just spratic and I had a few questions that might help. 1) First off I have a quick question. Does the ms dns support the use of views somehow? (I couldn't find anything about it) 2) Is there anything special that the ms dns does (ie with active directory, or something else) that might cause connection problems? 3) Is there anyway to emulate the ms dns in bind so that clients would have full functionality? Thanks for the help, Leikor |

1) First off I have a quick question. Does the ms dns support the use of views somehow? (I couldn't find anything about it)
Well, yes, same functionality but not called "views". Unfortunately, I'm no Microsoft DNS Server guru so I can't tell ya how to set it up. 2) Is there anything special that the ms dns does (ie with active directory, or something else) that might cause connection problems? Yes, Active Directory modifies the DNS information on Microsoft DNS Server using "Dynamic Updates". You can also enable dynamic updates with BIND to seamlessly integrate a BIND server with Active Directory managed DNS. 3) Is there anyway to emulate the ms dns in bind so that clients would have full functionality? As for the other problems you're experiencing, I don't know enough about them. After enabling dynamic updates (allow-update directive) on your zones and getting them working with Active Directory, see if the problems persist. If they do, then pick a problem and describe it to me in detail.
