Multiple Hosts DNS Setup

I want to set up 2 servers for multiple domains using one main domain name server. Here's the setup layout:

Nameserver:

www.maindomain.com

using:

ns1.maindomain.com => xxx.xxx.xxx.001
ns2.maindomain.com => xxx.xxx.xxx.002
ns3.maindomain.com => xxx.xxx.xxx.003
ns4.maindomain.com => xxx.xxx.xxx.004

Domains:

www.domain1.com
www.domain2.com

using nameservers =>
DNS1: ns1.maindomain.com
DNS2: ns2.maindomain.com

www.domain3.com
www.domain4.com

using nameservers =>
DNS1: ns3.maindomain.com
DNS2: ns4.maindomain.com

What is the best way to set up the DNS records and zones on each of the host servers? I'm a little worried about domains not being found on the second server, so do I have to set up PTR records between the two?

Has anyone seen a good checklist or guide to managing this?

Thanks in advance!

Are you looking to have 2 different physical servers, or 2 different DNS servers within 1 server?

Have you taken a look at the DNS Sticky entitled "Bet you want to setup a DNS server, huh?"

Once you setup the DNS for each of the domains you want hosted, they will be associated with the nameservers you associate them with. So if you associate:
ns1.domain.com and ns2.domain.com with domain1.com and
ns3.domain.com and ns4.domain.com with domain2.com

when someone visits domain1.com, they will view the server with domain1.com on it... the same goes for domain2.com

Keep in mind that once you setup DNS for each of the domains, you'll need to edit the domain at the registrar and point the particular domain(s) to the particular nameservers. Pointing ns1.domain.com and ns2.domain.com to domain1.com at the registrar is how the internet will find its way to your server.

2 different physical servers.

Yes, and the answer wasn't there... exactly anyways, so I'd like more specific info if possible.

I've been fooling with it since I started the post and exactly what I thought would happen is. The domains hosted on the second physical server (ns3 and ns4) will not resolve. The registrars have the correct info although I updated the IP's about 90 minutes ago (I'm hoping this is the problem).

It is possible also that this isn't possible to do? any ideas?

Also, do you have a firewall or router? If so, you'll need to forward the ports to both servers.

And do you have just 1 static IP, or 2?

Actually 4 static ips (2 on each server) and a firewall on each physical server.

Looks like the control panel I am using is incapable of doing this, so I will have to look into other ways of accomplishing this. BIND possibly.

I'll post again if I need further help. Thanks.
