Name servers
Hello
I have my own server setup with linux red heat 9 and cpanel 8. It is colocated with my ISP who assigned me two IPs. First ip 212.18.63.32 is the main and 212.18.63.34 is second (not used for nothing yet). My question is, can I use those two IPs for registring my name servers at registar of my domain or do I need the third IP? Im doing this for the first time and every mistake will cost me approx. 36 hours to descover that I was wrong. The firs Ip is (for all I know) assign to my server (machine name) and that is whay Im not shore if I can use it for my primary nameserver registration to. Please advice do I need the third IP ore not? Thanks, Erik |

You don't even need 2 IPs. Some registrars won't let you use identical IPs, but you probably don't want to use them anyway.

I have got my IPs from my ISP firm where my server is stacionared. Conisder that like some data center. I have placed my server there becouse that way I can provide best access (speed) to internet. In the begining when they geave me IPs they also geave me DNS1 and DNS2 no. 212.18.32.10 and 212.18.32.12, those IPs I indicated when I registred my name servers and I have been able to register domain name with them but refreshing proces is slow and they are not fully functional yet. But as much as I know those DNS are already used by them (if you tracert them you will got names resolv1.amis.net ... I named them ns1.webicom.net...) and I am afraid that is not right. I do not know if that is going to point on domains on my server for wich I created DNS records ore mybe it will becouse my server is in thers network as it woul be one of theirs?
SilentRage im not shore if I understand what did you mean that I probably do not want to use 2 IPs? Regards, Erik |

Yes, Im traying to setup reselle server. I did enter those name server names and everything looks fine, but im not shore if tis is rely going to work coze it past more than 48 hr from time when I first notice that my name servers ware registred. And it past more than 36 hr from time I redirected (chaged nameservers) at my registar and it is still not working. Im afraid that 212.18.63.10 and 212.18.63.12 are not right for my name servers and that I will have to use public IPs as I mentioned before 212.18.63.34 and 212.18.63.34. What do you thing?
Regards, Erik |

Tell me the domain and tell me all IPs that seem correct. I will tell you what IPs to use to register your name servers.

Thanks, SilentRage but I think that I know what to do now. On mondy my ISP will asign me te third IP and then I will have 2 IPs that I will be able to use for my name servers. I have one domain name registred and not used yet. At registar I will register my name servers with those two IPs (212.18.63.34 and 212.18.63.36.) and that I think should do the trick. I am waiting for the last IP but regardles if they asign me with diferent IP the point is that I need two IPs asigned to me so I can use them for name servers. Am I right or is there some hidden issue I do not know of? And then for all new domains that will be hosting on my server I will use those name servers wich I will register with those IPs.

Whatever. If you want to use 2 IPs go ahead. But you could've just used 1.

You see, the problem is not that I want two IPs. The problem is becouse the registar of our country top domain, they want two name servers on two diferent IPs. At the begining they were eaven checking if those 2 IPs are realy on two diferent servers but now they do not do that any more. I know your way is good but I will host a lot of domains with our top domain for aur contry .si (slovenia) and It is better if I do this way.
Thanks SilentRage for your effort, Erik |

heh, boy are you unlucky. yeah, I mentioned in my first reply that some registrars require 2 different IPs. It's pretty rediculous. Good luck.

Need similar help
I have signed with a Virtual Private Hosting.
They gave me 2 IPs. Now i want: ns1.domain1.com ns2.domain1.com But when i want to set it up, they ask me an ip. So i don't know if it is that i have to use: 1) One of the IPs they gave me. 2) The ips they use for their own name servers. Why i suposse this? Just because it should be the same: ns1.hostingcompany.com 1.1.1.1 ns2.hostingcompany.com 1.1.1.1 This 2 name servers goes to a 2 different ips that when the client arrives there the URL is resolved. So should be the same puting to my name servers ns1.domain1.com 1.1.1.1 ns2.domain1.com 1.1.1.1 Since the only diference is the visual, the only diference is the name server that the people see but in the core there should be the same ips? I'm right? or i should put the ips they asigned to my hosting site? Please help me Oscar |
