Hi,

To set up your own website, so that anyone on the Internet can view it, it is much easier to use a free DNS service, rather than host your own DNS servers. Here is a rough guide as to what you need to do:

1. Register your domain name with your web hosting company.

2. Create an account with ZoneEdit (http://www.zoneedit.com) and create a new zone with the same name as you registered in step 1.

3. When you create a zone with ZoneEdit, you will be given the addresses of 2 name servers. Go to your domain name registering company and ask them to change the nameservers to the ones provided by ZoneEdit.

4. In ZoneEdit control panel for the correct domain, click on IP Addresses (A) and enter "www" and the correct IP address of your server.

5. On your server, make sure that any firewall is configured to forward all requests on port 80 to your internal web server.

HTH,

Edwin

I know this guy, I've already shown him a whole list of free dns hosting services (where in my opinion several are better than zoneedit). He wants help with Microsoft DNS Server, not instructions on how to setup dns with somebody else.

You don't need to spam several topics you know.
And I know you're asking specifically about Microsoft DNS Server and all, and I don't like responding with unhelpful perhaps obvious advice, but it doesn't appear anybody is answering. So if you're willing to give BIND a chance, I'll be glad to help you.

SilentRage,
I am just about to setup my 2003 server and was wondering if the free dns hosting service solution is best for me as I want to host my own web sites and setup a mail server. I curretly have the following:
Win Server 2003
Draytek 2600 router/firewall/switch etc
IP is dynamic from ISP

Any help/suggestions would be appreciated.
Tim

How dynamic is your dynamic IP? The reason I ask this is cause my IP is dynamic too but it's been months and months and months since it last changed. Gotta love how DHCP works. If you have a cable ISP, then your IP is not *likely* to change often, however, I do know of a few exceptions. If you use DSL, then there's no way you should host your own DNS server and you are better off with a free dns hosting provider. Here's the list I spoke of:

http://www.dollardns.org/compare.html

Even if your IP only changes at most once a month, I would only recommend self-hosting if you are just one of those people who like to do everything themself. Domain hosting is nothing like webhosting. Self-hosting a website is far far far superior than any other types of webhosting cause of the sheer power you have over your website. However, self-hosting your domain does not really give you much more control than domain hosting services may provide. Just go for the domain hosting service who let's you do what you want to do and you're set.

Remember you must first buy a domain before it can be hosted. Unless of course you go with the extremely nifty Afraid domain hosting service where you can get a large selection of free subdomains.
