New to DNS totally.
Hello, I found this forum by accident by ways of the great google. Well I decided to drop a line for HELP! It's simple well not realy but I have a dedicated server running on my Fiber Optic network (bad-***) zeon and all it's trippy! Anyways I need help like I said before.
First: What I have... I have the server box I have a partial webhost on it (need pop/smtp/dns/ect.) I have several game server running off of it. I have advanced server 2003 enterprise I think. I have to say i've done fairly well so far on this server... noting I have no previous experiance in actual SERVER HOSTING at all. Second: What I need help with. Well mostly DNS... I know it's a MASSIVE topic and theres MANY ways to do things I just have no clue what to do! I'm looking for a way to make my company(s) have they're own DNS server and their own www.whatever.com kinda thing. I understand the theory of DNS just not HOW TO DO IT. So if anyone is kinda enough to help me set up DNS basicly from scratch and tell me what I need I would be much abliged. If i'm out of place here or if I don't belong here tell me. -Sencerly The gimp master EXTREME. Streek. BTW: My other Cane is a Hummer. |

Weel, if you breeze through this forum you will find out how to set up BIND, which you will need to set up DNS, i'm sure 2003 has DNS integrated... but i cannot help you with that as i have not used it at all... Anyway BIND is easy to set up... just DL a win32 binary install and look through these post as everything you need has been said 1000 times by SilentRage.... Ohh yeah and dont forget that DNS runs on port 53 UDP and TCP so open your firewall.... You will need to set up a "zone" file for each domain, and in each "zone" file you will be able to do all the fancy stuff... If you need more help after reading this forum then.............. Ask...... but you should give your specific errors, specific domains and mabey even your zone files....

Good answer. Now that I'm a moderator of the forum, I'll be posting how-to sticky topics soon. But yeah, choose a dns server you want to go with. MS DNS which came with your OS, or ISC BIND which I can most handily help you with?
