New zone, or new host? Which is best?

As you know, I struggled for a while, just trying to sort out my DNS settings. At last, I managed to make mine, and my host's sites work.

Throughout my struggle, I still don't understand whether it is best to create a new zone or new host when you want to host a new site.

I really appreciate all you guy's help, especially SilentRage, whose answer showed me the right path - Thanks again.

But now, I would appreciate any article links on this subject matter, or direct guidance. I would specifically like to know about which is more reliable, and fast.

Depends on what you have to work with. Define 'host', I'm a little confused with what you're saying about that.

As for setting up a new zone, et al.

Whenever I set up a new domain for customers, the domain gets its own zone file.

Whenever I set up another host on the same parent domain, the new hostname jsut gets an A record in the existing zone file.

For example:

Say I got a new customer, with domain custdomain.com, I would then create a new zone file, custdomain.com.zone with the entire setup.

Say I get another new customer, with domain newcustdomain.com. Again, a new zone file gets created, newcustdomain.com.zone.

Then, say, the first customer came back, and wanted to add another server to his network, say an ftp server, ftp.custdomain.com. Then, I would edit the original custdomain.com.zone file, and add the proper A record for ftp.custdomain.com.

Hope this helps... more descriptive scenarios usually lead to better answers...

-Gary
