newbie dns question
Hi. First of all please excuse my ignorance.
I have a website running on win2k server. through a small router then to a cable modem to the internet. My domain is at registered at domain-maniac.com, I am using their url forwarding to my ip address with cloaking. It works but I am finding some problems with with cookies on the client side after having users go to the domain name instead of the ip#. Also if I try and navigate to any page within the domain name like: "http://www.mydomain/otherpage.asp" it just goes to root of site. My other issue is with the forwarding page at domain maniac I have no way of changing this page to add meta tags, etc. My question is can I run my own name server? I have win2k server and I see where I can install a dns server from the cd, but not sure if this is my best choice? I have only one outside ip(cable modem) Don't I need another outside IP to tie with the dns server? Or can I use the same one my web server uses? what about secondary name server? Domain Maniac has a place for me to create name servers based on my domain an asks for a ip of server, and also that dns must be set up on server, does win2 server work for this? Or are there any free nameservers I can point to from domain maniac, then have the name server point to my IP without using a forwarding page? Thanks In Advance for Any Help! And Again, Sorry for the dumb question. |

Simple solution: Go to http://zoneedit.com and sign up for an account. They provide free dns up to a point and have faq's to help you set it up.
More difficult solution: You can run your own name server on the same IP as other types of servers. You can also solve the secondary name server issue with one name server by making two entries using the same ip but different names, such as ns1.domain.com and ns2.domain.com, since your name server responds to a port request. Free name servers such as BIND exist but others such as Simple DNS are inexpensive and much easier to learn. |

thanks
thanks
so I can run the dns server on the same ip I run my webserver? Every where else they say I need at least one more outside IP address for the dns. If so I think I want to go that way, I think I can muddle through setting it up. Or am I way off? |

You can run the dns server on the same IP with your webserver. The problem comes with the secondary dns, which can be overcome as well, as I described in my previous post. It is possible though that your registar will not allow you to use the same IP to assign two name servers, in which case you'll need to use zoneedit or something similar for the secondary. I believe that the other IP is used for redundancy and if your setting up a webserver for a business or something important then that is the way to go. One issue may be if your on a dynamic IP. With a dynamic IP running a name server will be a problem, since it must be manually updated each time your IP changes and may take 72 hours to take affect. So if your IP changes often you'd have quite a bit of down time.
