Private and Public DNS

Currently I have a couple of private WIN2K DNS servers running on my private LAN. Both are setup with IP Forwarders to my ISP's public DNS servers.

My domains are currently hosted on another companies public DNS servers.

Im interested in hosting my own domains(because I plan to be hosting subdomains soon), but I need to know the proper way to go about setting this up so that I dont screw up my private DNS servers.

Im assuming that I will leave all my private LAN clients still pointed to my private DNS servers, is this correct?

Then I could set up Simple DNS for my public DNS server?

New to the whole DNS thing. Thanks for your help.

Just some addiional info:

Youre resolvers can be separate from your masters. In other words...

The nameservers your desktops use to answer Qs like "where's www.yahoo.com?" do not need to be the same name servers that the outside world uses to answer authoritative Qs about domains you handle.

In small-ish setups... it's sometimes best to have your bigger ISP be the SOA for your domains. Then tell them to slave their nameservers to your one name server. Setup a new name server (any kind you like) and ocnfigure it authoritavitely for any zones you want to play with. Then your ISPs name servers do the hard work of answering all the Qs, but they periodically check your one name server for information. BTW, modern name servers will notify the slaves (your ISPs dns servers) whn you change a zone. So updates propagate reasonably.

You absolutely need the "bat book" -- the DNS and Bind book from O'Reilly. Absolutely absolutely. Must have and read it before you dive in.
