Private network, BIND and DynDNS
Hi, I've just set a DNS on my private network ( 192.168.0.x ) and it's working well. And now I want to map all my computer on the internet.
My server's already have a domain name (in fact, it's a zone...) with DynDNS. My question is : can I map my computers on internet with my own DNS ? And if I can, how can I do this ... Configuration : DNS : linux with bind 9.2 thanks, ______________ P_R |

What is your domain? I'll check out your domain to see what type it is. Once I know this, I will give you the answer I recommend.
1) If it is the subdomain type, I'll teach you how to setup a split DNS so that your server can gain control over part of the domain. 2) if it is a real domain, and DynDNS simply hosts it, I will teach you how to host your own domain, cause it is a lot easier than managing a split domain. Unless you're worried about your public IP changing, in which case I'll have to put on the ole thinking cap.

It's a subdomain (ombres.ath.cx). On my private network, I can reach all my computer but I can't do it from internet.
(ex.: athlon.ombres.ath.cx is reachable on ly from 192.168.0.x) my network look like this : server eth0 : 192.168.0.1 server eth1 : ombres.ath.cx athlon eth0 : 192.168.0.2 gateway/DNS : 192.168.0.1 laptop etho : 192.168.0.4 gateway/DNS : 192.168.0.1 I hope it can help _______________ P_R |

er, let me get this straight. You want people to be able to connect to each of your computers? Well, your router is what takes care of that. Well, I'm going to ASSUME that you know that it is the router that determines which computer on the LAN a person on the internet can connect to. And I'm going to ASSUME that you know that you can't have more than one webserver or more than one ssh server available to the internet. And I'm going to ASSUME that you know that all 3 of your computers may have a different domain, but the exact same IP from the internet.
If I assume correctly, then you want me to go on. To setup a split DNS, you'll have to be able to specify a NS record - or name server for your subdomain. Will DynDNS let you do this? If not, then you won't be able to use the DNS server on whichever of your computers. However, you can still "map" your network. I'm going to see if I have an old account with DynDNS, and if not, create one, so that I can determine DynDNS's capabilities. |

You assume very well ;-)
I have lots of theorical knowledge but I need a few hint to make it practical... |

Does DynDNS let you add NS records to your domain? I'm still trying to get into what appears to be my DynDNS account... (username SilentRage exists but is it mine or did somebody else make it? dunno, I'm still finding out)
