Register seperate ip for subdomains???
If I register my domain name domainname.com to ip x.x.x.x which is publicly accessible.
then if I want to go to ftp.domainname.com where ftp is an name of a computer of which FQDN is ftp.domainname.com, will it work? or I will have to register it seperately and do a redirect or port forwarding kind of thing?

Yes, it is possible to "Register seperate ip for subdomains", you just have to know the IP of the FTP server has. This technique is for example also used to create a mail sub-domain, where mail servers are placed on its own server..
Port forwarding is needed if the server is behind a router. This applies to all kind of services, including HTTP (80) and FTP (21).
