We are installing new external DNS servers in two different data centers and we currently have 200+ domains that point to these external DNS servers using expample.domain.com and sample.domain.com. My boss wants to renaming the servers and change their registered names to use ns1.domain.com and ns2.domain.com. The hard part would be to track down all the owners and have them log into their accounts to change the name and update the hosted DNS. Can I alias the old DNS names to their new names? What type of issues could I run into if I did this?

The following would be an example of a lookup if the old names are aliases of the new.

> example.domain.com
Server: ns1.domain.com
Address: 10.10.10.20

Name: ns1.domain.com
Address: 10.10.10.20
Aliases: example.domain.com

> sample.domain.com
Server: ns1.domain.com
Address: 10.10.10.20

Name: ns2.domain.com
Address: 10.10.10.30
Aliases: sample.domain.com
