search directive in resolv.conf
RedHat 9 Question
Could someone explain in elementary terms how the search directive in the resolv.conf file works? If FQDN is not provided, how is this directive able to append the correct domain name without checking some sort of cache or list? Is it just a guess and check mechanism in which the hostname is appended to every domain name provided in the search directive? Thanks |

Quote:
It's for resolving short hostnames - e.g. test So if you have the following in your /etc/resolv.conf: search example.com company.net Then your computer will try and resolve test.example.com followed by test.company.net. It will return the first query that was successful.
