Setting up DNS & Security
Hi All,
I'm new to linux and was wondering if someone could either walk me through this or point me to a document that will walk me through this. Basically I just finished setting up a webserver and I need to setup DNS on it. I need the ability to host multiple domains on it. Also, I would like to disable any unnecessary ports, basically only leaving open SSH, HTTP, FTP, and anything else necessary. I am new to this so I need thorough explanations. Any help is greatly appreciated. |

For DNS you need to use Bind. Info is at ISC's website . Here's a DNS HOWTO from The Linux Documentation Project.
As for shutting off the ports. You'll need to use netfilter/iptables to do that. There's plenty info on how to do that on their website HERE , especially check out the HOWTO section of their site. |

Not necessarily. In fact, if you do, you may well find yourself in a BIND. I'm using djbdns to publish DNS data for my domains, which (very much unlike BIND) has never had a security hole, and is vastly simpler to configure. I would really recommend it over BIND any day. If you're starting DNS from zero knowledge, give it a try.

Yes - don't use Windows to run services that are going to be available to the public internet. |
