stupid DNS question ..
Is there a way to wildcard pole a dns server for hosted listings? For instance ... I would like to generate a list of hosted names from a given dns which meet the following general layout ..
URL .. where the "*" could be a 1-10 alphanumeric. I would think that this could be done in either a one or two step process .. downloading a complete list and then putting it into excel or something to whittle it down later. Thanks |

It's possible to do more than that, but not all servers will let you. For example, my domain dollardns.net allows DNS Crawler users to do this for informative purposes, but would not allow external requests to get zone information. Here's the DNS Crawler link for a few domains:
Zone Transfer for DollarDNS.net Zone Transfer for secure.net Zone Transfer for pulaskitech.edu

I'm not interested in anything but the domain names themselves .. don't want to even ping'em .. just get a list of domain names that are hosted on a given server that fit a general profile. |

dunno what that had to do with the quote. I am just saying that Zone Transfers is the only way to do this, and not all servers allow it - not even mine with the exception of DNS Crawler.
As for the rest of the servers, the best I can suggest is testing a server for different common host names like contact, ns1-4, www, ftp, mail, smtp, pop3, pop, mail1, smtp1, www2, etc etc etc. I believe it's possible to create a packet that performs multiple queries, but I have not myself tested this. |
