You register your domain with the IP. So specify both for the registration of the domain.

In addition you need a couple of new records under the "interactive-options.com" zone.

interactive-options.com. NS ns1.interactive-options.com.
ns1.interactive-options.com. A 216.99.99.169
medium.interactive-options.com. A 216.99.99.169

Your image link doesn't work btw, but then, I don't really need it to see what you've got.

Exclamation

i have those entries in my dns already actually... the issue is when i go to namesecure.com and try and change their dns settings to use my ns1.interactive-options.com dns, they say that it failed to add ns1.interactive-options.com or medium.interactive-options.com ...

sorry the picture was not working earlier but it should be now... the server was down for a bit... you can take a look at how i have the dns written, hopefully that will help out...

Your SOA record has an invalid contact email field:

http://serialcoders.sytes.net/cgi-b...&lr=4&submit=DS

And don't try to add the records to the namesecure.com servers. Just remove them from the equation. Have the registrar point to your server instead of their servers. Host your domain completely.

Otherwise, if you can't get their records updated, then there's no hope for ya.

Talking

interesting... i guess i made a mistake in setting up my SOA but i fixed the typo now... what else do i have to do to get my dns working?

so what are you suggesting that i do about the namesecure thing? when i login to their website and then go to domain nam server info it lists their two DNS there... when i try and enter ns1.interactive-options.com i get a 500 error telling me it could not be added... are you saying that i should just remove the dns1.namesecure.com and dns2.namesecure.com from their site or are you saying i should add mine in there?

Let me tell you a little story which may help you understand. (warning, humor may cause spontaneous combustion)

There's a little boy named geoffrey. This little boy had no domain. This little boy wanted a domain. But this little boy is also scared of letting other people manage his business ya know (cause little boys get picked on). So this little boy (geoffrey he is called) read his school books to learn how DNS worked and, in particular, how to get himself a domain all by himself (cause he's a big little boy now). So he read about how there's these big time "registrars" who just hands out domains to those boys who's got themselves a little bit of allowance money. So he scraped and saved and did odd little chores (did I mention his name is geoffrey?) until he could buy one from verisign. The registration process required that he specify 2 dns server domains and IP's that will act as the owner - or "authoritative" (he could barely pronounce the word) - servers. He only had one little computer he got for christmas, so he "tricked" the registrar (with only the briefest giggle) by specifying the same IP for both domains.

He read about how the registrar would enter those two domain's and their associated IP's into the domain registry so that all requests for his domain will be automatically referred to the little boy's - geoffrey's - server. By doing this he is SELF hosting his domain and will never have to worry about editing domain records on a webpage ever. However, he got confused when configuring his dns server and setting up his domains, so he called SilentRage (with a capital S and R) to practically set it up for him for free of charge (cause he's just a nice guy like that).

And thus ends my tale about the little boy called geoffrey.

So as I said in my previous post, get rid of your current domain host, and do self-hosting. Let me show you something:

I sent a query to look up your domain to "a.root-servers.net" one of the core DNS servers that requests are sent to when you don't know the final destination server:

http://serialcoders.sytes.net/cgi-b...&lr=1&submit=DS

As you can see, it bounced to "A.GTLD-SERVERS.NET" (another core server) and it returned 2 domains, and 2 IP's. If I had let the script, it would've made one more bounce to one of those two servers and finished resolving the request.

YOU want to be the man to be placed in that exalted position, not "namesecure.com". You can't do this by editing your zone on your server. You gotta find some way to transfer your zone from "namesecure.com" and host it yourself. If you registered your domain THROUGH "namesecure.com" then you may need to contact them to ask them who they registered the domain from so that you may have it transferred to yourself.

That is, assuming they don't act as a registrar themselves and will be glad to transfer the hosting to yourself.

Red face

alright, i see what you mean... i understand now that changing things in my lookup zones wont help me at the moment, instead i contacted my registrant namesecure and they should get back to me shortly, but untill they do, i have decided to remove their dns servers and i have made sure that the domain interactive-options.com is simply pointing to my ip... from this i am assuming when the changes take place that any requests to www.interactive-options.com will go to my dns server, get processed and then go to my web server...

thank you for the help, and we will just have to see what happens after the changes take place... i might have some more questions afterwards...

thanks
kube

Quick way to learn how to create a DNS correctly is to go to URL and download their Simple DNS Plus. It has a wizard with it that will help you do everything except for learning about your NS (It is included, just have to add after you complete the wizard). Once you create the entry you need for each domain, go to the directory Simple DNS is stored in (I think under program files) and look under the data directory and it should have a perfectly created "domain.ds" file for you to import into MsDNS.

Next, I would suggest logging into NameSecure and looking for an area called "ChildServer" (DirectI), "Create Host" (StarGateInc) or something along those lines. Once you find that area add an entry of host name "NS1" and point it to your IP address. This will register your nameserver with that registar and add glue to your NameServer. If you don't have a second IP address (Most of us small folks don't), then just add a second entry for "NS2" pointed to the same IP. It works just fine or you don't have to add one at all.

Remember, it will take a little time for you changes to take place over the internet. Be patient. <Grin>

If you would like to check on how your DNS is doing, go to URL and run a check on it.
If you have anymore questions, please fill free to email me. I just saw your question by accident via a google search. Not a regular here.<Grin> Hope that helps.
