subdomains?
This is not the wisest question, but I need to ask it anyway.
Normally, do we create a separate zone for a subdomain? So, if my domain name is www.mydomain.com, and I want to create a subdomain www.subdomain1.mydomain.com, do I create a new zone for it, or do I just add a CNAME record called "www.subdomain1" within the mydomain.com zone? Which is the more common practice? |

No. You just add another record to the existing zone file. >> or do I just add a CNAME record called "www.subdomain1" within the mydomain.com zone Yes, but it's probably better to just add another A record instead of a CNAME record. Why -- because CNAME records have potential for misuse and may cause a caching nameserver to make another extra query to your nameserver. (The second section of http://cr.yp.to/djbdns/killa6.html has more, if you're interested in the technical details. Yes, I know this is a djbdns site, but the same principle is true whether you're using BIND, djbdns, Microsoft DNS or whatever) [edit] Another link http://www.rscott.org/dns/cname.html [/edit]
