Two A Records?
I'm having server issues, so in addition to my base server, I have a "technical difficulties" page set up on a different server. How do I set up two servers to host my domain name, as backup in case my main server dies?
My A records are as follows: www.qartis.com. A 207.6.25.110 www.qartis.com. A 64.180.25.187 So the first one is my main server, and the second one is the backup site. Problem is, the backup IP is taking over, and all my traffic is being redirected to a "technical difficulties" page. How do you have 2 A records, with one having more authority over another? |

For the normal routine of domain to IP resolution you can't. The IP list is returned by the server more or less in random order. The reciever retrieves this list and will try the first one it gets. Some implementations may try the rest of the IP's if the first one fails. So sometimes he'll get the traffic, sometimes you will.
The best way to do this is to not have 2 'A' records for your domain if you don't want him having traffic on a day to day basis. If you anticipate going down, change the dns.
