Exclamation Unified Namespace help

Hi all,

Am new to the forum (which looks very very useful). Thought I would post a query that has been bugging me for a while.

Occasionally, previous engineers to myself call Active Directories (2000 or 2003) by the same name as the companies website. Microsoft seem to encourage this when installing AD. However, DNS then resolves the company website internally. I have managed to get around this before by adding a www DNS entry and pointing it to the website's IP Address. Of course, this is not brilliant as ISP change their IP addresses.

Can anyone recommend a suitable solution to this?

Many thanks,
Ice

scriptify updating the IP. If you are using Active Directory to update DNS records, then your server must be configured to use Dynamic Update. Dynamic Update is a mechanism in the DNS protocol to change the record information for a given zone. There is a program destributed with the BIND dns server called "nsupdate.exe" which can be used to modify zone information. You can write a simple program or script to periodically use this program to update your IP.

Or shoot, I could modify the dynamic IP client I wrote for my site (which uses Dynamic Update) to work with your server for a small fee. Small since it wouldn't require that much modification. If you have a C programmer perhaps they could modify it. It's open source. Let me know if you're interested.

Thanks for the feedback. How easy is it to find out what IP Address my website is using (since it's a huge ISP)?

Thanks,
I

this is your IP:

www.whatismyip.com

And btw, I'm stupid. If your IP changes more than once a month you shouldn't host your own domain. So what I said about scriptifying updating your IP is all no good. It doesn't update the registry.

Apologies. I'm really trying to find out the IP Address of my website (which isn't my ISP). It's a oneandone website.

Thanks,
Ice

login to your 1and1 account
Click the Setup button
Click "Manage Domains" button

You should see a domain like s########.onlinehome.us

resolve that domain to get the IP address of your website.

No, there's nothing like that. I'll have to call them.
THanks,
Ice

maybe you had a different package. I signed up for the 3 free years (or was it months?) of hosting. I didn't like their interface and it wasn't root anyway, so I ignored the account since. I logged in to get the details I gave you.
