Upcoming rapid updates for COM/NET domains
First some background...
A user registers domains at a registrar. The registrar takes all user requests and submits commands to the related registry. Whether the registrar submits these commands instantly depends on the system the registrar uses. ICANN manages the COM/NET registry which registrars submits COM/NET domain registration commands to. These changes have always taken effect immediately. Verisign is responsible for the 13 GTLD dns servers that store authoritative server information for all registered com/net domains. Currently Verisign updates their dns servers with the registry contents twice a day. The result is that domain registrations could take up to a minimum of 18 hours for changes to take effect. It has just come to my attention that verisign is planning to change all that. Provided that the registrar submits commands to the registry promptly, a client may expect registry changes to take effect in the domain name system within 5 minutes. Other registries like ORG and INFO have already enjoyed rapid updates to their DNS. It is planned that the goliath that is the COM/NET registry will enjoy the same in Sept 8, 2004. I've updated the Rapid Updates FAQ URL since verisign apparently changed it. So if anybody got the wrong page before, look again.

Rapid Updates has been implemented:
Verisign's News Article Today I tested the system and it is a lot faster for sure. I added another name server to a .COM domain that is hosted with OpenSRS. This change took effect in less than 6 hours. Update intervals will vary between registrars. |

Verisign said that it will take a few minutes, but if you say
that it take 6 hours, this is not Rapid Updates. I know for sure that .ORG takes only a few minutes. |

As I said it depends on the registrar. The registrar must submit the commands promptly. In the case of OpenSRS, I think they queue commands.
Another person changed registration info with godaddy and I think the change took effect much more quickly. I don't use godaddy so I can't test this for myself. I also don't have any .ORG domains registered through OpenSRS. But I have noticed the .ORG is indeed very fast with domains registered through MyDomain.com |

Ok, I'm shocked. In a test at mydomain.com I got these results:
Added nameserver to .ORG domain: took approx 4 minutes to update on the dns servers Added nameserver to .NET domain: took approx 1 minute to update on the dns servers Then I removed those servers and got similar times. Rapid Updates is fast See, I did know what I was talking about. It is registrar dependant people! |
