Unhappy Using Windows 2003 DNS: Forwarding Errors

Hi, I keep getting errors like this in my error log:

Code:
The DNS server is configured to forward to a non-recursive DNS server at 192.72.81.200.

DNS servers in forwarders list MUST be configured to process recursive queries.
Either
  1) fix the forwarder (192.72.81.200) to allow recursion
	 - connect to it with DNS Manager
	 - bring up server properties
	 - open "Advanced" tab
	 - uncheck "Disable Recursion"
	 - click OK
  OR
  2) remove this forwarder from this servers forwarders list
	 - DNS Manager
	 - bring up server properties
	 - open "Forwarders" tab
	 - remove (192.72.81.200) from list of forwarders
	 - click OK

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

The errors don't always include that IP. The problem is that I don't have any forwarder with that IP! There is only one forwarder and it's totally not even close to that IP. This it the only DNS server for my domain. The one IP I have set in my forwarder is the same one this PC runs on. It allows recursion. What can I do to fix this?

Thanks,
~Trellis

P.S.-Also sometimes I get an error message saying there was an error reading a something. Click ok to terminate or cancel to debug. I thought there may have been an issue installing and I did a full reinstall of Win2k3 and still have the same error!

I don't use Microsoft DNS Server, however I have this habit of looking at the bedrock of a problem. The server probably didn't invent that IP. It must exist somewhere on your harddrive. All you need to do is remove it.

First stop, the registry. pull up regedit, and do a search for that IP.
if that didn't work the second stop is to do a text search in all directories that have anything to do with Microsoft DNS Server.
And finally, if the above didn't work, do a massive text search of the entire C drive for that IP.

This does not guarantee you will find it. If you're unlucky it could be stored in 4 byte form, or in unicode display format.

I use windows 2003 and actually found this post while trying to fix my own forwarding problems. I dont use forwarding but I want my server to query root servers when it doesnt have the record. My server basically was only responding to local records, and not looking to the root servers. Just out of curiosity, i went ahead and set "Disable Recusion" under the Advance tab and hit apply. I then did a test under the Monitoring tab and instead of it taking a moment to say "failed" on the recusion test, it just said "failed" instantly. So then i went and unselected "Disable Recusion" and low and behold, it was now working. Like it just needed to reset something.

Also, after you enable "Disable Recusion" it will grey out the whole "Forwards" tab. so like SilentRage was talking about, it should in theory reset your settings where ever they are on the computer. oh and BTW, I even tried uninstalling DNS and reinstalling and no luck.

Hope that helps.

I take that back. my server has just stopped responding to outside domains again. but thats ok, because thanks to SilentRage, I now know that BIND is on NT and I can actually use all my config files from my linux box on my windows box now
