I am still a beginner when it comes to hosting a website. I have read the sticky's and i am still unclear as to what direction i should go.
MY SITUATION: i have registered a domain name the company i registered with forwards requests to: http://My.IP.Address my problem is that i don't want people to see that in the address bar i would prefer them to see http://www.mydomain.com i am using a relatively new release of apache tomcat as the web server on a windows machine. Any help would be appreciated, even if you pointed me in the correct direction thanks in advance! |

The easiest way to do that is to use a forwarder.
Goto dnsexit.com, or any dynamic IP forwarder, sign up, use your IP, www.My.Ip.With.Subdomain.com and have them forward it to www.MYDOMAIN.com That Simple. Cost: About 12.95. This is the cost of reserving the domain name with DNSEXIT.com and you get the forwarding for free. Other scripts and workarounds are avail. for 'Spoofing' the address bar. Check google, you mileage may vary... hth...Frog

thanks for your reply,
i alredy have my http://ipaddress cloaked by a free service www.zoneedit.com, the problem is that they use a 100% frame and stick my website inside. not a big deal i guess but i was wondering if i could "cloak" it from my end instead. i guess i thought if i set my computer up as a dns it would do that but i guess my knowledge of what a dns does is still low |

Currently your domain resolves to 2 IP addresses:
dig westcoastproductions.ca This is the IP address of the forwarding servers. If you made it go directly to your IP address instead then you won't have to worry about frames or redirections or anything. It would work as the internet's inventor intended. |

the domain is registered with internic.ca and they give me two options. 1) to use a dns either theirs or one of my choosing. or 2) to forward the url. I have tried to forward the url option but then the browser shows http://ipaddress. So i chose to use a dns service that would cloak the address.
how do i get it to go directly to my ip without useing the forwarding servers? Do i type my ipaddress in as the dns? or just try the forwarding thing again? |

You should use option one, and either self-host your DNS or use a free 3rd-party for dns hosting. Then you'll have the control over your DNS that ole Rage approves most of.
