Webmail and subdomains inaccessible
<I've already searched the forums for this particular problem, but couldn't find an answer. Also, already RTFM>
I'm administering an Apache 2 server on Fedora Core 1 with BIND, using a combination of bash access and Plesk 7.0.3. I've established a domain (lmgartists.com) that works just fine, and have set it up with Horde webmail. I've tested the webmail, and it is apparently nominal. When I enter lmgartists.com in a browser or locally enter GET lmgartists.com, I get the appropriate homepage. However, if I enter webmail.lmgartists.com in a browser or locally enter GET webmail.lmgartists.com, I get either a search page (e.g., 'webmail.lmgartists' not found, buy our garbage and use our terrible search engine), or this: <HTML> <HEAD><TITLE>An Error Occurred</TITLE></HEAD> <BODY> <H1>An Error Occurred</H1> 500 Can't connect to webmail.lmgartists.com:80 (Bad hostname 'webmail.lmgartists.com') </BODY> </HTML> This also occurs with any other subdomains that use *.lmgartists.com syntax. I've already checked, and webmail.lmgartists.com and the other subdomains have already been given A domain records with the proper IP. I've been working on this for at least a week, and I've read tons of Dev Shed threads before posting, and yet I am still completely baffled. |

looks like it's a DNS problem for sure. Your domain has 2 dns servers:
As seen in the domain name system As seen in the whois database system So yeah, worldnic hosts your domain. What does worldnic have to say about your webmail domain? dig webmail.lmgartists.com It says: "What the hell you talkin 'bout boy? There's no such thang as a webmail.lmgartists.com". So either your dns host is misconfigured, or your REAL dns server isn't even being used.

These are the DNS settings that were automatically created by Plesk:
216.55.161.10 / 24 PTR lmgartists.com. ftp.lmgartists.com. CNAME lmgartists.com. lmgartists.com. A 216.55.161.10 lmgartists.com. MX (10) mail.lmgartists.com. lmgartists.com. NS ns.lmgartists.com. mail.lmgartists.com. A 216.55.161.10 ns.lmgartists.com. A 216.55.161.10 test.lmgartists.com. A 216.55.161.10 webmail.lmgartists.com. A 216.55.161.10 www.lmgartists.com. CNAME lmgartists.com. |

Um... err... you don't say! When you say your dns host is misconfigured, I'm assuming you're talking about WorldNIC. When you say your REAL dns server, are you referring to the nameserver on my end, the webhost? |

that's riiiiiiiiiiiight. Either you meant to use WorldNic as your dns host, but you haven't configured them for your new subdomains - OR - You're manipulating the DNS on your server using that plesk thingy not realizing that it isn't being used.
So there's two ways you can go about fixing this. |

Thanks for the quick replies and everything, SR. Much appreciated. I could reciprocate, but only if you ever need game mechanics explained in numbing detail.
Right about noonish, I got access from my "boss" to enter our Registrar and fiddle around with its naughty bits. Where it said *.lmgartists.com, there was a blank space where IP might've gone, so I plugged in the appropriate IP. Then, in the nameservers, I added ns.lmgartists.com, which is ostensibly the BIND server on my local machine. It still hasn't done anything (don't expect definite results within 38 hours), but nothing's broken, yet, either... so I'm going to say I'm making progress. |

so give a yell if it still doesn't work after 48 hours since the change.

Bam! She now works perfectly... except for Netscape Navigator... for some reason.
I ain't complaining, though, because it works as designed for IE and Mozilla. I can only guess about Safari and Opera. Anyway, thanks for the help, SR. |
