Website miror (DNS Question)
Hey,
I have a domain registered with Register.com. The website is being hosted on my own server (Windows 2000 Server with AD and DNS Server running). Altough I have my own DNS Server running, all I had to do until today is just change the IP on Register.com's control panel. I want to host a copy of the website on a different server with the same configuration (AD & DNS). The reason for that is because the website was not available at a critical time when google was trying to browse my website (Nov 15th - Florida Update) deu to a power outage at the office. The servers are located in different areas, so I want that if something like that happens again and one webserver is not available, then the other web server will take over. Since I am a complete idiot when it comes to DNS: 1. How should I configure the DNS to point to 2 different IPs? 2. Register.com's customer support told me they do not support this feature, so I have to find my own DNS hosting (Which I have). Is it a DNS configuration? Thanks for your help |

Unless you have a script monitoring things and ready to change DNS information on a moment's notice, you won't get what you expect. If one of the IP's associated with a domain doesn't work, it will cause *half* (in the case of 2 IP's) of your clients to not reach your site. Likewise, if you have 2 DNS servers configured to host your domain and one of them is down, it will cause *half* of your clients to not be able to resolve your domain.
Distributed servers were originally intended to distribute load, not to prop up unreliable servers (except in the case of mail servers interestingly enough, made possible by priorities in the MX record). And if you're using Microsoft DNS Server, I probably can't help ya. Unless of course you're able to follow my one-time given instructions. And that is to add more than one 'host' record for a single domain. I'm not surprised register.com doesn't support multiple IP records. You should always host your domain yourself or with a company that specializes in that field. Here's a list of domain hosts. As far as I know, all of them support multiple IP records for a single domain. http://www.dollardns.org/compare.html
