Not sure what you're asking. The alternative to buying a domain is getting a free subdomain. I recommend the following:
http://freedns.afraid.org If you want to buy a domain, the alternative to hosting your own dns server is going for a free domain hosting service elsewhere. Here's a comparison chart I've cooked up: http://www.dollardns.net/compare.html

On a private network the alternative to DNS is called WINS. There is no public technology that is an alternative to DNS.
"the maximum of the domain names i mean" You seem to be full of insane questions. But I will humor you. The short answer: over 0.000000003 google domains (a google is a 1 followed by 100 zeros) The long answer: A domain name cannot be longer than 254 characters. A domain name can contain periods, dashes, letters (case insensitive), and numbers. In my calculation I will exclude non-ascii letters which seems to be the newest extension to the DNS (foreign characters in domain names). So that makes for 26 letters + 10 digits + 2 extra characters = 38 characters. 254 to the power of 38 = 2.4192526840802981174698167436685e+91 In translation, that is: ~24192526840802981174698167436685000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 domains. This is an approximation. Since the number is so huge, and my calculator does not have enough space to display such a large number, a lot of the value is lost. So the number is actually bigger than that. Also, since I did not include the newly supported foreign characters in domain names, that substantially increases the number above. Also domains cannot start or end with a period or dash. This decreases the number by a relatively small amount. Last edited by SilentRage : April 25th, 2004 at 09:17 AM. |
