Windows 2003 Server DNS Nameserver
I've been looking all over this forum and some others for a solution to creating and running my own nameserver on a windows 2003 server. I have a cable connection with a linksys router, i have a windows 2003 server setup 192.168.1.100. I have registered a brand new domain name on godaddy and set my nameservers. I have my router configured to pass all necessary ports
i have hosted a domain setna.net using "MYDOMIAN.COM" and their ip forwarding but it is not customizable enough, that's why i'm trying to do it this way. setnaperformance.com 68.168.239.97 nameservers: ns1.setnaperformance.com 68.168.239.97 ns2.setnaperformance.com 68.168.239.97 I'm confused on where to begin setting up the DNS. Do i need to further configure settings on godaddy or is everything else to be done on the server? |

Your question is very common, so I've updated the sticky topic to include a post describing how to setup the domain at your registrar.

thx for your response, but i'm still looking for a microsoft dns solution, or is the bind solution the best idea for this type of setup? I have seen very little microsoft dns advice on the web, are there any solutions out there?

You've probably read the dns server comparison post in the sticky topic right? Well, if you had, then you'd know there's nothing really wrong with MS DNS. It's just a new player in the field so there's less support for it. However the MSDN has all you need to know to learn about the MS dns server. I also don't know much about it since I've never used it. I can offer basic advice and content advice and accessibility testing, but not a step by step how-to.
It's up to you. |

dig @68.168.239.97 setnaperformance.com any
dig +tcp @68.168.239.97 setnaperformance.com any The above links displays the result for UDP and TCP queries. UDP times out, and TCP connections fail quickly (which suggests a "connection refused" error). Either the server is offline (which is my guess) or there is a router or firewall blocking it. |

Hi ManimaL89,
I hate to say it, but you've got Adelphia. Give up, it will never work . They block more ports than any other ISP. You will never be able to host DNS using them. In fact, it is unlikely you will be able to host your web server. It may work with URL redirection running on a different port than 80, but that's about it.Regards, AlanGrah ____________ DNS Services: Nettica.com |

Adelphia :(
thx for crushing my hopes and dreams
yes i have found out that adelphia does block pretty much everything but.... thats for the residential lines, i have access to a business line where the actual server will be residing and believe most if not all ports are open. Adelphia does suck, my speed is 1/4 of what it use to be, service cuts out occasionally where they "delete" u from the service and then blame it on your computer. The only good thing i have going is i used my router to force a static ip and have had the same one for nearly 3 years and iis/exchange runs surprising well. |

But yeah, who needs to setup their own DNS server anyway. I understand hosting your own webserver - loads of advantages to that. But really, outsourcing dns hosting is pretty recommended. I don't know how to tell you to fix your firewall or router problems (or ISP problems?), but I can offer you a list of free dns hosting providers:
