    Help mating Windows2000 into a Win98 network

I have a home network with two Windows98 computers that I wish to add a new laptop running Windows2000 to. The network has no domain.

I have been able to configure the laptop running Windows2000 into the network so that it can see the other computers and access their hard drives as desired. However, the other two Win98 machines can see the laptop running Windows2000, but after clicking on drive C: are NOT able to view any files or directories.

I have checked the permissions on the laptop running Windows2000 and the they are set to shared, so I can't see any reason why the other two computers should not be able to access its hard drive.

    What am I missing?

Off-topic (Windows File sharing question), this should go into Windows forum.

    >> why the other two computers should not be able to access its hard drive

Guest account is disabled by default.

    freebsd,

Off topic - Sorry, I wasn't sure where to post this question

Your comment is correct that the Guest account is disabled by default. However in my attempts to find the problem I discovered this and enabled the Guest account.

However, other that to uncheck the box that says "disable account" I did nothing else. I assumed that by unchecking that box the Guest account would be enabled. This did not work since I still can not access the files.

Is there more I should have done? Do you have any other thoughts?

    Thanks much.

The thing to do is to create accounts on the W2K machine for the computers running W98. You can even set passwords for them after the accounts are created by right clicking the new users account and selecting set password.
Then go to the folders you want shared and in the permissions give the new users rights to view the folder.
It is not recommended to activate the guest account as it presents a security hazard.
