Beginner trying to understand DNS, MX, A and mail
i have a VPS server with a fasthosts Centos5.7 with plesk.
IP address: 188.8.131.52
I registered a domain name from fasthosts, say,
which I designate fasthost DNS
in fasthosts control panel i added DNS records.
(blank) 184.108.40.206 A
plip 220.127.116.11 A
www plop.co.uk CNAME
plip plop.co.uk 10 MX
So i want my VPS fqdn to be plip.plop.co.uk
Apart from being a ridiculous name, I take it this is ok?
My VPS can also be a DNS server
Should i turn VPS DNS on .. is it an advantage to have it, aswell as use the fasthost DNS?
I notice that people have something like mail.plop.co.uk as an MX record(?)
Is plip.plop.co.uk not enough to direct emails (firstname.lastname@example.org) to my VPS?
thanks very much

I dont see any advantage for you to enabled DNS services on your server. Your registrar already provides you the ability to manage your DNS zone at no additional cost and they provide a highly reliable service. If you delegate the zone so that you can manage it on your system, you increase the risk that something may go wrong and name resolution may fail. I would manage it through the provider.
Based on your description, your MX record seems to be OK. The point of the MX record is so that when another mail system needs to deliver mail to your domain, the mail system will perform a query against your domain name and look for an MX record. As long as the MX record resolves to a host name, then mail will be sent to that target host. That target host needs to be running SMTP services to accept mail.
