Newbie with FB 1.5.3, cannot access test data.
Have a Fedora Core-5 box running as a server, SAMBA runs fine, FlameRobin from a Win2K client is able to manage users, retrieve server version info, create databases... but I cannot for the life of me figure out why it refuses to access the example "employee.fdb". I have tried explicitly setting the LAN path and also mapping the directory as a K: drive without success. I've been thru the release notes and quick start guide and am sure I am missing something basic. Have ordered the Firebird book but it's a few days away... Complete noob to SQL here so please have patience with me. I obviously have a long way to go.

Please no K: or Samba but, where is the database server installed? On the FC5 machine?
In this case you'll have to specify, in Flamerobin running on win2k client, the FC5 server address and the local (remote) path of the database (or setup aliases which is a more elegant solution IMHO)

The server is on the FC5 box, yes. LAN is set up as a Class C, and I have tried the path (\\server\data\data.fdb) registration. No joy. It doesn't seem to matter if I use the explicit IP address or the server name. It returns an error message:"SQL -902" and "no such file or directory"
...but I can create a DB on the server from the client. I will look into aliases as a solution. I like "elegant". Thanks for the prompt reply. DrE- |

you probably have no access to that file or folder.
i recommend using the aliases in the aliases.conf, it solves your problem and has several another advantages as well. |
