You can import a graphic into Flash (File > Import). If you import a .gif with a transparent background, it will stay transparent. Jpgs don't have transparent backgrounds. If you use File > Save for Web in Photoshop you can see how it will look. The left side shows you the original, and the right side shows how it will look after you save it. If you use a setting for a .gif and check transparency, you can see the transparent background. If you choose .jpg, you will see it won't be transparent.

Hope this helps.

I have found the graphics usually come out much better in flash when I export from photoshop in PNG-24 format rather than GIF. Anybody else have an opinion on this?

I don't usually use PNG format, but I heard the size was much larger. Is that the case?

even when you import as PNG you can have flash compress it as jpg, so there's little difference in file size.
