Stylesheet switching - can't set cookie on FortuneCity

I've been trying to implement the style switcher documented at http://www.alistapart.com/articles/alternate/

Though the code will set a cookie when I work on my local files, it won't when I put the site onto free FortuneCity hosted space.

Anyone had problems with cookies with this, or other, free host, and know how to overcome them?
