Best FTP Server to use?

Hello, i want to know which ftp server i should use. I cant decided between WU-FTP or ProFTP. I know either is a good choice, but i dont know what he advantages and disadvantages are. I'm running slack9.

If you know of any other choices please let me know! Thanks for any advice.

I ended up choosing pure-ftpd. I like it very much. Its very simple and very secure.

Hmm we used pure until some nasty backdoor security issues popped up. Been awhile so I can't remember them off the top of my head, the biggest was users found ways to leave their home directories and snoop around Make sure you look at that issues carefully, ever since we have been using proftpd, it is awesome, and users leaving their home folders is a thing of the past

Its always smart to chroot users to ~ and also make sure your ftp server runs as a normal user and not root (so that if someone does manage to crack your ftp server, they wont be able to break anything).

Hmm... This concerns me. The following statement came directly from thier homepage:
Quote:
Unlike other popular FTP servers, the number of root exploits found since the very first released version is zero.

This is one of the reasons i choose pureftp. Mabey i was wrong. Also, i do run it as root. I had never thought of running it as root until i read the following statement out of thier manual:
Quote:
Note 1:

On Linux systems, you will notice that the server is always running as root. This is intentional, and more secure that servers who are changing their effective uid (and only effective uid, they still have root privileges in fact, use ps -U to see what servers are really running as root) . We are using Linux kernel-specific tricks to drop privileges that "ps" can't show.

I'm not sure weather this statement is correct or not. How would i make pureftpd run as a normal user? There is no configuration file or command line setting for this.

Thanks for your input!

-Mr.K

P.s. One of the other reasons i choose pureftp was that it was very fast. With proftp, it would take 20 seconds or so to login. I dont know if it was my setup or if it was the software, but there was a noticable lag on login.

Send a message via Yahoo to nuk
try vsftpd

I'll put my vote in for vsftpd. Fairly easy to set up and configure, though not as fancy as say proftpd. Figure if it can handle the load of RedHat's anonymous FTP servers (and the security issues), it'll work well enough for me

Some people like ncftpd, though I think it costs $$$. About the only one I don't think I've ever heard anyone really *like* is wu-ftpd. Pick one, read up on it, and lock it down as best you can. If you don't need the fancy features, one of the more minimal ftp daemons might be more appropriate.
