"Enabling" ftp module in PHP4

Is there any to to "enable" the ftp module in PHP4 when I haven't got access to the source code (recompiling is not an option)? I've got access to a /modules directory where I found a file named "mod_php4-4.0.0-module-ftp-imap-freetype-gd.so". Has this something to do with the ftp functions? Thanks.
