I have a Linux server where I host several sites. I'd like the ability to log into a file manager interface like WinSCP over SSH and have the ability to "su -" so I can manage any site's files or system files without having to log in as each user or chowning every site file/dir to a single user. I may be mistaken, but it seems like one could just make a file manager application that uses the SSH protocol and allows one to "su -" whenever they need more permissions. Does anything like this exist? I was playing around with WinSCP, but it looked like I had to allow root login, which I don't want to do. Thanks for any help.

I don't know about WinSCP, but you can manage files over SSH using SFTP. OpenSSH supports SFTP by default on the server and on windows you can use Filezilla to connect. I don't believe that you can su or sudo over SFTP though and I'm not aware of any clients that allow file management over SSH without using SFTP. |
