FTP not working over dialup

Hello,

I have cable internet and use both SSH/SFTP (port 22) and FTP (port 21) to interact with my server. Everything works fine at my home and office, but when I travel I occasionally use dialup. With dialup I am unable to connect to my server, or any server, using FTP (SSH/SFTP still work). I get a "could not connect to server"/"the operation timed out" message. It seems as if port 21 won't connection.

I have tried different computers with the same dialup connection and they work with FTP. Neither a dialup connection with Telus nor dialup tethering with my Blackberry (set up as a dial up connection) through Bell work with FTP. I have tried both Filezilla and IE to connect to FTP with no success. I make no system changes when switching from cable to dialup.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what could be causing this mysterious problem?

Hi,

it's possable that theres a firewall before the server which only allows connections from specfic ip address's. when you use dialup you will be getting a dhcp address so it will possably be different every time.

Ask your server admin if this is the case.

Can you ping the server over dialup?
If you tracert from home and then from the dialup where does the trace stop over dialup or does it get through ok.
