FTP / Site Management Software?
I wasn't sure if I should put this here or in "Development Software". I hope I chose the right one. Sorry if I didn't.
In a nutshell, what I'm looking for is an FTP client that works like Dreamweaver, but isn't Dreamweaver. Specifically it's DW's team collaberation tools that I'm after. The whole check-in/check-out thing. For those who don't know, if I am working on a file, I check it out. If someone else goes to make a change to it, they see that I have it checked out, and have to wait for me to check it in before they can do their stuff. This keeps us from over-writing each others work. It's also great for one person working from multiple computers. DW works fine, but I find myself working with subcontractors who don't use Dreamweaver. I have a hard time making them buy it just to use it as an FTP client. I'm hoping there is something else out there with similar functionality. I don't mind making them spend $50 for an FTP client. Another thing that really appeals to me about Dreamweaver is how you don't have to navigate to the remote directory to upload a file. You might be showing the root directory in the remote window, and looking at a file 5 directories deep in the local window. But if you select that local file and click "put" (or "check in") it will automatically put it in the correct sub-directory. Anything else like this out there, or is Dreamweaver the only one doing this stuff? Thanks. |

Seems like you're looking for a CVS program. Here is one we use at work.
http://www.tortoisecvs.org/ Basically like Dreamweave with the check-in/check out. We use it on our LAN, and servers across town, and seems to do a good job. Not sure if you can put it on a webhost, theres a server-side program you have to install first. Also, SourceSafe would be looking at, but I think Dreamweaver might be cheaper. |

Thanks. I'll look into those. Although I'm not likely to be able to use something that requires server-side installation. We work on way too many servers to require that of everyone.
But, now that I know I'm looking for a "CVS program", at least I have a starting point. What does "CVS" stand for, anyway? "Content (something) System", I'm guessing. ?? |
