Help!!! Red hat 7.2 FTP, WEB, MAIL connectivity to the server is running slow
I have RED HAT 7.2.
HELP last week when trying to access my box which is about an inch from my laptop takes forever to log in with telnet or takes minutes to pull up a web page or check mail. Forget FTP because it says socket connected waiting for message then it times out. So I put in a new board and processor and a new drive and reloaded everything. Today the same crap just happened about an hour ago. I was running fine one minute then blah. I know it's not a DNS problem because using the ip instead of the domain has no change on anything. Plus everything works fine on the box. Any idea's of what the problem could be? What can I do? Is there a problem with TCIP and if so what can I do to check or correct the problem. Man this is frustrating Thanks Jobesd

since the problem repeats, could be your NIC getting too hot or being broken.
just using the ip does not prevent you fron DNS failures if you have any reverse-lookups like syslog(), apache-logs, etc. if you are connected to the internet too, this could be a virus. or some haxor or script kiddie playing with your server ![]() |

I installed a new nic no difference also, I shut down the syslogs and apache logs. I am lost at this point. I shut down everything that is not needed with no luck. jobesd. |

boot your distro from a cd-rom and check what files have been modified. this problem can be caused by 1000 things. haxxors/script kiddies are very common nowadays. (and a good excuse if your boss asks you why things dont work
)maybe it is your system going stand-by (apm)? turn it off. maybe it is your power supply not supplying enough power to constantly run several HDs? |

i cannot tell you about redhat. but suse has an option to start a "rescue system" that boots directly from cd...
then you can use RPM to check which files have been modified since installation. there is also some thing called "live-system" from most distros. running directly from the cd for evaluation purposes. hope this helps... |

Ok, I isolated the problem to being internal.
I got a dialup account and I can FTP, Telnet view the web pages and send and receive mail like before Now what can my problem be my setup: Code:
cable modem

________ ROUTER ______________

| | |
Laptop Linux box Other PC
192.168.1.100 192.168.1.101 192.168.1.102
Now the wierd thing is as I was typing this I wanted to say that when loging into webmin I got an error: ip address 192.168.1.1 is denied.. thats the gateway. I never had that error before. In webmin I allowed only three IP addresses 192.168.1.100, 192.168.1.101, 192.168.1.102 and localhost. however, My problem just went away the same way it arrived out of thin air. Now I am baffled beyond my thoughts. I just spent 8hrs or so on a problem that just vanished. Is there a ghost in my machine or what? any advice for my next adventure with this problem that I know will come but I just don't know when. jobesd Last edited by jobesd : February 28th, 2002 at 08:40 PM. |
