How To Create An FTP Sever/Site

Ok I'm a newbie when it comes to FTP. My goal is to setup an FTP server/site at home so I can access files from a remote location instead of having to email or add files to a flash drive and vice versa.

Operating System - XP Home Edition

If there is anything else you need to know please let me know.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Since you are using Windows XP, you can use IIS to setup a simple one. You can get an idea on the link below.

IIS FTP

Well I ended up finding Serv-U and SmartFTP. I setup everything last night but what do I need to connect from a remote computer to the server at home? Oviously another FTP client but the whole connection setup is fuzzy to me. Not sure if I just enter the IP as I did at home or what.

type ipconfig and this will tell you your ip address. Just use that address to ftp in (note you may have a dynamic ip (dhcp) so it may change from time to time).

If you have a firewall that may(probably will) block the incoming connection, you will need to allow all ftp traffic to your computer (not a good idea) or allow ip from a specific address (better).

Depending on what you will be transfering you might want to think about ssh.

I use Serv-u as well. It is very good. Its a shame that you don't have xp pro on your home system as i would suggest you configure it for remote desktop so you can start the server when needed - this just means its only online when you want it to be and save your computer from being hacked in any way.

Yeah I wish I had XP Pro too. Well I couldn't find where to allow certain IP addresses to connect via the firewall. Not sure if its in the router setup or within Norton Internet Securities.

Any help would be appreciated.

Norton Internet Security is pretty much horrible. You are better off buying a router and using a normal desktop firewall software.

I already have a router. There is the Windows Firewall option that is disabled since I have Norton.
