how to set up ftp on apache

how do i set up ftp to run on apache
urgent please reply
when i log on using an ftp program it doesn't work and the connection fails
i tried manually in telnet and msdos but it doesn't work either

You assign a $HOME to user so this user can FTP right into his docroot.

There is no such thing as URGENT in public forum. If you are really that urgent, hire a consultant. That said, don't ever use such term here again.

Correct me if I am wrong but I believe the persons orignal request of "how do i set up ftp to run on apache" was a pretty straight forward request.

This is your forum and I 'spose you can handle it in any manner you wish, but a simple "I don't know" would have sufficed... :-)

Actually, there is always such a thing as urgent. It may not be urgent to you, but if it's urgent to the OP, then let them mention it.

@apache: We need more information to help you out, such as:
What OS are you running?
What FTP server are you running?
Is this your own hosted server or a dedicated one?
Are you behind a router and/or firewall? If so, have you forwarded and/or opened the appropriate port(s)?
You mention the connection fails... is that the exact error msg?
What have you tried that hasn't worked?

The more information you provide, the more someone can assist. By providing us with things you have try, will eliminate us from having you do the same thing.

Even if it is urgent to the OP, a reply almost 6 years later probably doesn't fall within the required time frame.

I guess I didn't see the date/time of the post, but even so, while some things may have a statute of limitation, snide rudeness is not one of them. And thus I said so.. :- )

the simple answer is "you don't".
apache is a 'http' web server, not an "ftp" server.

other than maybe finding a script to 'act' as a file transfer server, the only other alternative is to setup an actual ftp server. which would depend on the OS [windows, linux, etc.] as to what to recommend.

It's some time later, at 3am in the morning, and I really should be asleep. But I just had to register to this forum and say what a great time I had reading this post! I never noticed the time decay either initially, which only made it all the funnier.

You could use the Apache FtpServer if you know how to build your own software... which this poor enquirer has either given up on or become a guru in by now. Or, if you still use Ubuntu despite the complaints about it's aggressive release policy (ok - 1 compliant with a lot of words in it), you could use their (Canonical's) recommended vsftpd server, which I am sure is good for other linux distro's also. But as our friend DonR has pointed out, you definitely need some kind of ftp server in order to do what this chap WAS trying to achieve. Specifics are the key to obtaining more accurate help - as our very diligent policeman above was trying to point out.

I would have posted the links to useful pages for these two recommendations but the rules state somewhere (I can't quite find where) that new users cannot post urls - sorry I couldn't be more helpful.

I had a great laugh reading this thread, especially the time decays.

I have an apache server running from windows XP, and everybody is able to connect to it. I set up remote access, which works just fine. However, I want to be able to send files to the host computer so I can update my apache website.

I notice there's an FTP apache addon, but I haven't been able to configure it. Is there anybody that can help me or get me a good tutorial?

Hopefully... This question will be answered in less than a year.

Greetings from the year 3015. If you're reading this some time in the year 2012 onwards then my FTP transfer through space and time to the dev shed forums via Apache Http Server has worked. FTP has become the dominant communications protocol across the entire multiverse and now supports IPv87 for layer 4, quantum tunneling for Layer 1 and ASCII file formats. BTW I'm just about to FTP myself to Rigel 7. It's a bit hot there but they do great cocktails.
