how to set up FTP service on different port?

I am trying to setup FTP server on XP, and for some reason I can't use the defaut port 21. I tried to set up to listen on different ports like 29, 8000, 8009, etc. None is working.

All get time out error message, except port 8000, on which I get " no data connection" error. and it showed that I seemed to have entered the root directory, but can't see anything.

My guess is I only opened the control port, the data port is not there for the connection? But how to accomplish that?

Thanks for any input and help!

(all the ports I tried have been opened on router and firewall)

May not be of interest, but if you download the latest version of Cerberus FTP Server, you can set this quite easily.
