If you temporarily disable your firewall does it work?

no it still does not work

i get the error "425 cant open data connection"

i have forwarded the correct ports on my router (port 21 and even 20) and done the same on my win fw but still the error comes up.

it must be connecting to some extent because it asks me for my user name and password

ok, if its not the firewwall and your allowing ports 20/21 I would guess your making a passive FTP connection which uses ports 21 and 1024+

Try allowing tcp high ports through your router and firewall.

when you say "allow high ports through your router (ports 1024+)

what exact port do you mean? any over 1024?

Passive doesnt use the tcp data port but the server specifies a high port to communicate over.

Have a look at this link

Hope this helps.
