Problem logging into FTP through proxy
I currently moved into dorm and have access to the college's T1 line from my dorm room. The problem is, the server is set to block any FTP uploads. I can browse FTP sites through IE, but can't get my FTP software to properly connect.
When I open IE, it asks me for username, password, domain. Then, everything connects, but only IE seems to be able to do this. I talked to the guy running the server, and he told me that FTP was only disabled because of a software limitation on his side. But, since I run a website, he said that if I could find a way to hack together FTP access, I was allowed (as long as I didn't hurt the server in the process). So, any ideas? I'm not even sure where to start, but I really need to get access ASAP. I'm using WS_FTP lite, and it doesn't even recognize that I'm connected to the internet at all... IE is the only program that seems to see anything (and asks me for my login information). On another note (and part of the same problem), I can't get Outlook to see my internet connection. Since IE works fine, I'd assume that Outlook would, too, but that doesn't seem to be the case. But that's another thing I need fixed ASAP. Any help would be greatly appreciated. |

Grab SmartFTP, http://www.smartftp.com.
What you need is the ability of your software to work through proxies and firewalls. I don't think WS-FTP has good features for that, especially with the lite version. SmartFTP is completely free, not shareware like WS-FTP. IE has the ability to auto-magically check and configure itself for proxied connections, especially if the proxy server is set up correctly to push it's pac config to its clients. Your other software is not that intuitive, which is why nothing else works. I'm currently using SmartFTP to go through my company's proxy servers to get to my internet sites that I need to. You should be able to find out either the hostname or IP address of your proxy servers by askign the campus IT dept., or if they've got it statically configured, you can find out in your settings for IE, under connections. You also might want to check with them what type of proxy it is, and if it requires authentication or if it's just an open or HTTP proxy. Smart software will allow you to tunnel it's connections through an http proxy, but you gotta know how the proxy authenticates before you can get your side set up. -Gary |

I tried SmartFTP, and while it's a nice program, still nothing works.
I know that the proxy/firewall is located at 192.168.4.1:8080. I set the connection type to HTTP Proxy - Connection Tunnel. Then, I entered the username and password I use for connecting to the internet... but nowhere can I say what domain I'm connecting to. That might have nothing to do with everything, but I'm not sure what's in my way. |

More help??
I have a similar problem, but I'm looking to get items like messengers, IRC, etc to work. I've tried multiple tunneling programs, but to no avail. The proxy server (bible1; port:80) allows email and internet browsing. If there is any help out there, let me know!
