Professional File Transfer with proFTPD
Professional File Transfer with proFTPD
May 14, 2003 - Need to set up an FTP server on your network to simplify file transfer between users or hosts? Look no further than the robust, secure and very free proFTPD server, which has everything you need to get up and running in a jiffy. This article covers installing and configuring proFTPD for both regular and anonymous FTP, and also explains how to customize the operation of the server for different requirements. Please discuss this article in this thread. You can read the article here . |

I would like to see two more pages added to articles like this or the ones about Samba and LDAP and MySQL (even Oracle is for gui admin tools) ....
GRAPHICAL TOOLS to administer them on Linux/Windows!!! From what I see a wider adoption of Linux is prevented by "command line gurus", the average (technical) user should be informed about the chance to "startx" and use graphical tools.

You might want to look at URL if you are looking for a tool to administer MySQL. The product is called MySQL Control Center and it allows you to do anything you want to the mysql server (well except start it I think). They have both unix and windows versions of the product.

I know that tool, I was suggesting to add notes about graphical management tools in some articles.

oh sorry my bad. Having the articles discuss the different GUI tools is certainly a good idea.

Hi pablo,
We're a little confused as to what you mean by this. Can you clarify how proFTPd (file transfer) would be used with LDAP (directory access)? Quote:

I think you have the wrong idea about LDAP. LDAP can be used as a central form of user authentication & user information storage and is supported by many programs. ProFTPD support for LDAP is provided by a module. More info can be found here http://www.horde.net/~jwm/software/mod_ldap/ |

Excellent article and I have understood the Basics of using proFTPD. I have a small problem with connecting to the server via command line. I always get the following error:
Code:
[root@localhost etc]# ftp localhost Connected to localhost. 220 ProFTPD 1.2.7 Server (ProFTPD FTP Server at OzeSupport) [localhost] 500 AUTH not understood. 500 AUTH not understood. KERBEROS_V4 rejected as an authentication type Name (localhost:jeffery): Note: Everything works fine through a GUI FTP client. Any ideas whats going on ? I am on a Mandrake 9.1 and proFTPD was installed when I installed Mandrake. |
