setting up ftp to work proproperly

How do i make it so that I can ftp into my linux box and when I do I end up at my main folder (/var/www) so that I can upload files easily and painlessly. Is there a good tutorial that addresses this issue on the net if so can someone please direct me towards it I have looked and can't seem to find anything. Also any suggestions would be much appriciated.

Use a program such as vsftpd, it is likely a FTP server came with your distribution. Once the FTP server is installed, you can either use virtual users just for FTP or local users, which have access to all system processes. If you want to use the server that came with your distribution, please list its (or your OS's) name if you need more help...
