Troubles Useing FTP
On one of my computers (my main one) I am unable to send files through FTP. I have tried a few different clients (SmartFTP and FileZilla) as well as the cmd line ftp client in Windows XP pro. I can log onto my ftp accounts and even create and delete folders, but I can't send files. They always time out. I can ftp files just fine from my laptop (which is on the same nework from the same router) and I was wondering what settings on the one computer could be preventing the sending of files through ftp? Thanks.

A firewall would do that.

If that's the case, you'll need to set your client to use Passive mode, which overcomes the restriction of the firewall by making the data connection outbound from your computer to the server rather than inbound from the server to your computer..

Ok, I checked and my client is set to use passive mode connection and the port IP mode is automatic. I am useing Windows XP Pro's built in firewall and I saw that it did have an exection made for my FTP client.

Also, sounds like you can read but cant write? could be a permissions problem.

I can read and write from other computers on the same network. I've tried ftping into multiple sites, too. Is there something I need to change on the one computer thats haveing the problems?

Is the one you're sending from Fat32, and the others NTFS? I think theres a 4 gig file transfer limit on fat32, but not sure if its on the sending, receiving, or both.

The computer who's FTP works (my laptop) has XP home on it, the one where it doesnt work (desktop) has XP Pro. That the only difference I can think of. Perhaps some settings in Pro need to be tweaked? I've had no problems FTPing large ammounts of data from my laptop (on the same network as my desktop).

Does your desktop (one that doesnt work) use wireless? If so, it could be timing out maybe.
