Can't actually hide those in ftp as a normal ls or list in FTP will show all files, including .whatever files.
Each of those files are for configuration of the different shells that have been used or configured onto the server. example: .bashrc = local bash configuration .cshrc = local csh configuration .emacs = local emacs configuration .kde = local xwindows configuration - kde window mgr. And so on ![]() When I say 'local'...I mean individual user customization/configuration file.

I normally use filezilla or smart_ftp as a client but I never see the dot files in the home directory listing. I know that using vsftpd the administrator can use .message files in any directory they want. Those files should never be seen with a normal directory listing. On my server they are not seen. I don't know why anyone should be able to view dot files at all on an ftp server. Must be a configuration file on the server that controls whether their viewed or not.
