If you are using the drag and drop features of Game Maker, then I highly recommend you move on to GML (Game Maker Language) as you gain very bad habits when you do eventually progress with Game Maker.
It provides all of the features you would use normally but allows you to access them in-depth. The language is also very easy to learn depending on your experience with programming and makes your work more
    accessible.

However, if you are using GML and wish to move on completely, then I suggest LibGDX, a game-development library based in Java. It has a complete set of PC game development tools and is also very easy
to understand and learn, the only requirement here is that you know the basics of Java and its syntax, which I see, you have currently stated. I hope this has helped to answer your question.
