That's not surprising. Try a bookstore.

"i feel horrible, one of my dreams as a pre-teen is to make kewl online games."
As is, say, the a good portion of game maker wanna-bes. At least you aren't disillusioned yet, which I guess is good.

"ive tried for one year and what do i get?'
Ermm...you tried programming for a whole year? Or just looking for a starting point?

"and a bunch of things about going to COLLEGE to do it"
No one said you had to go to college to learn programming. I learned programming on my own and got jobs without a college degree.

Just follow a good path to learning programming. Invest in some decent books. Add in some time for learning, and voila, you're on you're way to becoming a programmer.

Did you read the other threads in this subforum? Basically, our advice was to read about the various programming languages available, pick one that suits you best, and start learning to program with it. Eventually, you'll need to start applying programming to various topics.

Examples:
Browser based games: Server side programming language, HTML/CSS/JS, databases.
Online games: Networking, databases, client-server architecture.
Graphics heavy games: Multimedia APIs, OpenGL/Direct3D.
Cross platform games: Cross platform programming language/Cross platform libraries like SDL.

And to learn any of the above, you'll need...a programming language. So which ones are you looking at right now?

hahahahaha... oh boy.

true though... start with learning a basic OOP language like java or even PHP and if you still enjoy programming then get a degree in computer science

How do you expect to even make a game if your still asking what language should I use and what not.

Your like all those kids that wanna make a MMORPG and think its a piece of cake. Programming is very difficult. The logic ad whatnot. Don't expect to be able to program video games just off the ***.

I been programming on and off for over a year or so and I'm still not even able to make games yet.

DirectX and OpenGL are really a language of their own in their own way. DirectX is confusing so is OpenGL.

Take time to learn something then go from there.

You can't expect to just jump in there expecting to build a building. Get the ****ing learning then go get the hammer then learn how to use the hammer then start from there. Its nothing simple.

If you are committed then learn C++. I use C#. But thats me.

I could code a better game than Runescape in my sleep. That game is horrible.

Not to be rude but.

It's impossible for you to make a game without paying anything.
First of all you need to know programming. After that you need graphic development and aaafter that you need money to get it done.

I'm actual student on Seneca @ York University, Toronto, Canada. Studying Gaming.
And REALLY, is not a "OMG Today I'll do the best game EVER and 4 ever and EVER! and get tons of money! ^^ **cheers**"

To do a game, look first for ppl that knows about programming, graphic design, and sponsors.

By the way, If you are desperate and want "your" game online.
You can find online servers like:

Program needed - Game (Description)
OTServ - Tibia (2D Game easy to host)
eAthena - Ragnarok Online (3D/2D Game, 2 ways of hosting it. with .txt files or MySQL and PHP)
Habbo Retro - Habbo Hotel (2D Game, Heavy but easy to host - basicaly .txt files)

These are some i.e you could use, be careful with copyrighted content, they can sue you so it's up to you actually.

I made a game once, cost 1.05$ because I got thirsty and had to run down to the store and get something to drink.

I study gaming too, didn't cost me anything. Well it cost 20$ for the game but....

Care to elaborate on how you came to that conclusion?

Hitsu is just being a realist. You can certainly make your own online game for free. The internet is full of resources to help. I made an online RPG (brower based in PHP and MySQL) as I was learning both PHP and MySQL and it took about three years. I got it pretty far and did most of it myself.

The point is making your own game won't be quick or easy! But you could do it with little to no cost.

Guys, you're forgetting the cost of time. Making games (and programming non-trivial software in general) takes time. Time really is money, especially if you work in a deadline-oriented job or in business.

Learning on your free/learning from a college. Either way, some time needs to be invested in learning, and then in programming. Time that could have been used elsewhere.

Did anyone actually understand the message I was trying to communicate to the topic starter? Not a single one of the brands mentioned were the "most ownage"; I was merely trying to point out that everything Durrace needs to get started, he already has. Really, all there is to do is start coding and learning. Who cares what damned text-editor he starts out with? It's not like he's going to be creating anything remotely competitive in the next decade, anyhow.

To be an effective game programmer, one must first be skilled in general programming. Although I'm not necessarily an "effective game programmer", years of observing the field (coupled with some modest programming skills) lead me to make that statement confidently. To learn to program, pick up a book. That's where knowledge comes in, and that truly is one of the most valuable personal resources to a game developer.

PS: TextMate is the ultimate editor.

Sure, you can do a "Online Game" with php and mysql thats not big deal i can do it in 2 hr...
But do you really want to create something crappy like Neo Pets?
Thats tecnicaly "online" but not on real time...

To be
