You'll need yourself some programming knowledge. Are you wanting to do some Flash development or go all the way with more robust languages?

Cool. Get a lynda.com account. You can learn practically anything there. Preview a couple courses and see what it is you want to get into. I suggest looking into iPhone app development, Cocoa (Mac Development, not covered in Lynda... yet), C++, Java, or some other languages. Decide what you want to learn, then go to it. Preview a couple languages before you decide (most languages borrow from C, so start from there).
Be sure you understand you're going to have to learn a LOT, though. There are many building blocks along the way. You can't just take animations and turn them into a game. Most games you play today are developed my teams of tens, if not hundreds of artists, programmers, sound engineers, writers, etc. Take your time, bring some friends aboard, and don't get frustrated. It's a big learning curve, but well worth it, especially when you go seeking jobs. They pay pretty well.
Finally, I'm not sure how old you are, but look into game development, game art, and game design programs in colleges.

I need to devote all my time to animating, I'm planning on hiring staff including the programmer(s).
I really need some info on the complete progress from scratch to releasing the game on the shelves.
I want to know as much as I can before talking to potential staff.

See if you can visit some game companies, take a tour. They'll let you know what it takes. It's going to require a lot of up front capital, though.

Can anyone give me some helpful advice. I need to know a bit about 2d game engines, programming time, expenses and anything else on making the game and releasing it on the console shelves.

I am used to developing Business application. I can make them easily by Swing components.
However, in my opinion, Game Development is another story. The UI is free to be made, unlike Swing.
Can anyone suggest how I switch my mindset from Swing to Game Development in Java, please?
