Game Development - where to start?

Iím really interested in VR development but I have no experience in game programming. Iím not sure where to start or should I learn unity or oculus rift right away. I have a background in java and really willing to learn and explore more. As a beginner, what would you recommend to start game development? Suggestions are well appreciated.

You should start with basic tutorials, so you know the basic element of the language.

If you want to develop for Oculus Rift, you should also take a look at their developer site: https://developer.oculus.com/

My experience with game programming is when I created the game called Yatzy in Java (applet).
I would love to do more, but time and patience is unfortunately not that easy to find.

Start with the basics. For VR you'd probably need to be learning something C++

I'd have a go with Unity, it's a great engine just to learn some of the basics of actual game development.
Then move onto the oculus rift from within the engine. It's the way I'd go at least.
