Postgres Database Administrator

Our Scottsdale, Arizona Headquarters is seeking a seasoned Database Administrator who will be responsible for critical decisions with database architecture, deployment, control processes and procedures for implementation and maintenance of Postgres databases across the enterprise.

The successful candidate will implement data models, data access and table maintenance codes; resolve database performance issues, database capacity issues, replication, and other distributed data issues.

Successful experience in migrating from mySQL to Postgres is a definite plus.

Also, in-depth knowledge of database monitoring, performance tuning, backup & recovery, support and diagnostic tools is a must. Must be willing to learn and work with other relational databases as needed for supporting the customer's business requirements.

The successful candidate will have the following:
• 4+ Years Postgres Experience
• 4+ Years mySQL Experience
• 4+ Years MS SQL + Access Experience
• Strong Linux, Apache, and Unix Skills

Desired skills:
• Experience with PHP, PERL, HTML, XML and URL structure.
• Successful migration from mySQL to Postgres

I am responding to your posting for a PostgreSQL DBA.

By way of introduction, for the last three years I have been a PostgreSQL DBA/Developer for both development and production systems. In addition, prior to that, I was a Sr. Tech. Specialist for Computer Associates, providing worldwide critical high level support for all versions of Ingres. Both Ingres and PostgreSQL were developed at UC Berkeley by Michael Stonebraker, and PostgreSQL is actually "post ingres". They are very similar in structure, although IMHO, Ingres is more powerful. Altogether, I have over 10 years of Database experience.

I am very familiar with Slony, a PostgreSQL replication program, and at my last positions I was "the" Slony go to person. Also in my previous position, I was responsible for converting 50 MS SQL functions and procedures to MySql. Finally, I have recently completed a week of formal Oracle DBA training.

I am currently employed as a part time Postgresql DBA consultant with Fluensee (formerly TrenStar). I am located near Denver, CO and will consider relocating if the position is a good fit between your requirements and my skills.

Backup DBA to Comet wireless card billing database. Coding of new tables and modifications as well as pgsql custom functions & constraints. Primary responsibility for Slony replication schemas and implementation. Install & configure development PostgreSQL 8.1.1 databases on Redhat Linux servers.

*** Technical Support Specialist for all versions of Ingres on multiple O/S’s with Computer Associates. Responsible for resolution of all worldwide client issues that could not be handled by 1st level support technicians. Provided 24 hour support for Ingres clients worldwide. Calls often involved assisting local DBA’s to repair corrupted installations or databases.

*** Principal technical support for Ingres 6.0 and 5.0 based systems on DEC VMS systems for Chase bank. Includes user support of Ingres Form based , embedded SQL & embedded QUEL applications. Responsible for remote support and problem resolution from home when problems occured in night batch operations.
